JESUP — Chad Sanders and Darryl Armstead both admitted to being ashamed
of Glynn Academy's offensive performance in last week's season opener against
Bradwell Institute.
"Seven to nothing and 69 yards," said GA sophomore quarterback Sanders, referring to the 7-0 opening win for the Red Terrors at Glynn County Stadium. "That's pretty embarrassing."
The Terrors had nothing to be ashamed about Friday, however, in their 49-7 victory over Wayne County in the Region 3-AAAA opener for both teams at Jaycee Stadium.
Sanders and Armstead led a huge night for the Terrors (2-0). Sanders, a sophomore who was making his second start for the Terrors, finished 12-of-19 passing for 116 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, while Armstead, a senior running back, led Glynn with 141 yards rushing with a pair of touchdowns.
For the game, the Terrors racked up 351 total yards against the Jackets (0-2) in a game that included a running clock in the fourth quarter due to the state's 30-point mercy rule.
The Terrors led 25-0 at halftime, scoring on four of six possessions in the first two quarters. After halftime, Glynn scored all four times it had the ball, getting a field goal and two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 42-0 lead and a late touchdown in the final period for a 49-0 lead.
"We came out fired up and ready to go tonight," said Sanders. "It all came together. We needed this to get our season rolling."
The Terrors nearly posted their second shutout to start the season, but the Jackets scored with 11 seconds to go in the game against Glynn's backups. Wayne County quarterback Joey Daniels threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chris Smith and William O'Quinn made the extra-point kick for the Jackets.
Wayne County drove 70 yards for the score in less than three minutes for the touchdown, which was clearly the highlight for the home team's new no-huddle offense. Glynn held the Jackets to just 161 total yards, with 158 of that coming through the air.
The Jackets had just 33 yards at halftime, with Glynn dominating possession in the opening half. When Wayne County did have the ball, it had two passes intercepted and was otherwise ineffective.
"I thought we were hitting on all cylinders on offense, our defense was making a lot happen, and we were sound in our kicking game. We executed in all three phases of the game," said GA coach Rob Ridings.
Glynn had to punt on its first series of the game, and the Jackets took possession at GA's 43-yard-line. But an interception by Rashod Martin at the 30 gave the ball back to the Terrors at their own 39 after a penalty against GA.
The Terrors would drive 61 yards in nine plays, mixing the running of David Bailey and Armstead with the passing of Sanders before Armstead scored from 5 yards out.
Glynn surprised Wayne County with an onside kick after its score and recovered the kick at the Jackets' 47. Seven plays later, Bailey, who had nine carries for 53 yards in the first half, scored on a 3-yard sweep.
Glynn built a 22-0 lead with 9:40 to go before halftime when Armstead scored from 20 yards to cap a 65-yard drive. Terome Grant then ran for two points after a bad snap on Glynn's ensuing extra-point try.
Brett Bearden booted a 42-yard field goal midway through the second quarter which gave Glynn a 25-0 lead at intermission.
Sanders completed his first nine passes and had 71 yards passing at halftime, while Armstead had 98 yards rushing to help Glynn roll up 143 yards on the ground in the opening half.
"It was the offensive line," said Armstead, giving his blockers credit for his performance. "We were just getting yards, moving the ball forward, and keeping the momentum with each play."
After halftime, Sanders connected with junior running back Jarre Hall for touchdown passes of 13 and 23 yards. Bearden booted a 37-yard field goal on Glynn's opening series in the third quarter and backup running back Trent Murray scored from 2 yards on Glynn's final possession
